How to Delete Bookmarks (Chrome, Safari, Edge & Firefox)

Deleting a single bookmark takes a right-click. Deleting dozens of duplicates and dead links scattered across folders takes considerably longer when you’re doing it manually. This guide covers quick deletion in every major browser — Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox — then covers how to make bulk cleanup actually manageable.

How to Delete a Bookmark in Chrome

Chrome offers several ways to delete bookmarks depending on where you encounter them.

From the Address Bar (Fastest for the Current Page)

If the page you want to remove is open in your current tab:

1. Look at the right side of the address bar — you’ll see a star icon if the page is bookmarked (it appears filled or colored when active)
2. Click the star icon
3. A small popup appears showing the bookmark’s name and folder location
4. Click Remove

The bookmark is deleted immediately. This is the fastest method when you’re already on the page.

From the Bookmarks Bar

The bookmarks bar sits just below the address bar. To delete any bookmark shown there:

1. Right-click the bookmark
2. Select Delete from the context menu

On a Mac, if you’re using a trackpad without a right mouse button: hold Ctrl and click, or use a two-finger tap to trigger the right-click menu.

From the Bookmark Manager

The Bookmark Manager is the right tool when you want to delete bookmarks in bulk, search across folders, or find and remove bookmarks that don’t appear in the bookmarks bar.

1. Press Ctrl+Shift+O (Windows/Linux) or go to chrome://bookmarks directly in the address bar
2. On Mac, the shortcut is the menu path: three-dot menu → Bookmarks and lists → Bookmark Manager (or type chrome://bookmarks)
3. Find the bookmark you want to delete — use the search bar at the top to search by title or URL
4. Right-click the bookmark and select Delete

Deleting Multiple Bookmarks in Chrome at Once

In the Bookmark Manager, you can select and delete multiple bookmarks in one action:

1. Open the Bookmark Manager (chrome://bookmarks)
2. Hold Ctrl (Windows/Linux) or Cmd (Mac) and click each bookmark you want to remove — each clicked item becomes highlighted
3. When you’ve selected all the ones you want to delete, right-click any of the selected items
4. Click Delete

All selected bookmarks are removed at once. This works across folders only if you navigate to them individually — multi-select doesn’t span different folder views in the same action.

Deleting a Bookmark Folder in Chrome

To delete an entire folder and all bookmarks inside it:

1. Open the Bookmark Manager
2. Right-click the folder in the left panel or in the main list
3. Select Delete

Recovering an Accidentally Deleted Bookmark in Chrome

Chrome has limited native undo for bookmarks:

• Press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on Mac) immediately after deleting — Chrome sometimes supports undo for very recent bookmark deletions within the same session. This doesn’t always work, and it doesn’t persist after closing the browser.
• Check Ctrl+H (browsing history) — the URL will appear in your history even if the bookmark is gone, so you can re-bookmark it from there

How to Delete a Bookmark in Safari (Mac)

From the Address Bar

If the page you want to remove is open in Safari:

1. Look at the address bar — a filled bookmark icon indicates the current page is saved
2. Click the icon to open the bookmark popup
3. Click Remove Bookmark

From the Sidebar

1. Press Cmd+Ctrl+1 to show the bookmarks sidebar (or go to View → Show Sidebar → select Bookmarks)
2. Right-click the bookmark you want to delete
3. Select Delete

From the Edit Bookmarks View

The Edit Bookmarks view gives you the most control for bulk management:

1. In the Safari menu bar, click Bookmarks → Edit Bookmarks
2. This opens a full list of all your bookmarks and folders
3. Click a bookmark to select it, then press the Delete key — or right-click and select Delete
4. To delete multiple: hold Cmd and click multiple bookmarks to select them, then press Delete

Recovering a deleted Safari bookmark: Press Cmd+Z immediately after deleting in the Edit Bookmarks view. Safari supports undo for recent bookmark deletions.

Safari on iPhone and iPad

1. Tap the Bookmarks icon (open book icon) at the bottom of the Safari toolbar
2. Tap Edit in the upper right corner
3. Tap the red minus icon next to the bookmark you want to remove, then tap Delete
4. Alternatively, swipe left on any bookmark and tap Delete
5. Tap Done when finished

How to Delete a Bookmark in Microsoft Edge

From the Favorites Bar

Right-click any bookmark shown in the favorites bar and select Delete.

From the Favorites Panel

1. Click the three-dot menu (⋮) at the top right of Edge
2. Click Favorites — or press Ctrl+Shift+O to open the Favorites sidebar
3. Right-click the bookmark you want to remove
4. Select Delete

From the Favorites Manager

For bulk management and searching across folders:

1. Three-dot menu → Favorites
2. In the Favorites panel, click the ⋮ icon at the top
3. Click Manage favorites — this opens a full-page favorites manager
4. Right-click any bookmark and select Delete
5. To delete multiple: hold Ctrl and click to select multiple, then right-click and delete

Deleting a Favorites Folder in Edge

Right-click a folder in the Favorites panel or manager and select Delete. Edge will ask you to confirm if the folder contains items.

How to Delete a Bookmark in Firefox

From the Toolbar

If the bookmark appears in Firefox’s bookmarks toolbar, right-click it and select Delete Bookmark.

From the Library (Bookmark Manager)

Firefox’s equivalent of a bookmark manager is the Library:

1. Press Ctrl+Shift+B (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Shift+B (Mac) to open the Library
2. Navigate to the bookmark in the left panel
3. Right-click it and select Delete — or click to select and press the Delete key
4. To delete multiple: hold Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) and click to select multiple bookmarks, then press Delete

Firefox undo: Press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on Mac) in the Library to undo recent bookmark deletions. Firefox has better undo support for bookmarks than Chrome.

From the Address Bar in Firefox

In Firefox, the star icon in the address bar works the same way:

1. Navigate to a bookmarked page — the star icon fills in
2. Click the star
3. A popup appears with the bookmark details
4. Click Remove Bookmark

Comparison: Deleting Bookmarks Across Browsers

The Real Problem: Cleaning Up at Scale

Deleting one bookmark at a time is fine for occasional cleanup. The harder problem is that most bookmark collections that have grown over several years contain three types of clutter that are difficult to clean up manually:

Dead Links (404s and Gone Pages)

A bookmark may look valid — it has a title, it shows up in your list — but when you click it, it returns a 404 error, redirects to a domain parking page, or shows a “content not found” banner. The page has gone offline, and Chrome’s bookmark title doesn’t update to reflect this.

Checking each bookmark one by one is the only manual way to find these. In a collection of 500+ bookmarks, this takes hours. And even after you identify a dead link, you have to decide whether to delete it outright or first check if an archived version exists — you may have saved that article specifically because it was important to you.

Duplicates and Near-Duplicates

The same URL saved multiple times under different folder names, or slightly different URL variations that point to the same page (with and without www, with UTM tracking parameters, with and without trailing slashes). Duplicates are nearly impossible to spot manually when bookmarks are spread across a folder hierarchy.

Outdated or Irrelevant Links

Bookmarks you saved years ago and never opened again. Sites that have significantly changed their content since you saved them. Links to events that have passed or offers that have expired.

Deleting All Chrome Bookmarks at Once

If you want to start fresh and remove all bookmarks:

1. Open Chrome Bookmark Manager (chrome://bookmarks)
2. In the left panel, click Bookmarks bar
3. Press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on Mac) to select all bookmarks visible in the main panel
4. Right-click and select Delete
5. Repeat for Other bookmarks and any other top-level folders

Important: This action cannot be undone through Chrome’s undo function. Export your bookmarks to a .html file first if there’s any chance you’ll want them back. Chrome gives no confirmation prompt for bulk deletion — the deletion is immediate and final.

Deleting Bookmarks on Chrome for Android

On Chrome for Android, there’s no full Bookmark Manager view like on desktop. To delete bookmarks:

1. Open Chrome and tap the three-dot menu (⋮) at the top right
2. Tap Bookmarks
3. Navigate to the bookmark you want to delete
4. Tap the three-dot menu next to the specific bookmark
5. Tap Delete

For bulk deletion on Android, you can long-press a bookmark to select it, then tap additional bookmarks to add them to the selection, then tap the three-dot menu and delete all selected.
